| High
blood pressure is also called hypertension. When your heart beats it pumps
blood through the arteries to bring nourishment to the tissues. The force
of the blood against the walls of the arteries is called blood pressure.
If the arteries become clogged the heart has to pump harder to deliver blood
to the tissues which causes the pressure to go up.
High blood pressure is often referred to as a silent killer. There are
no symptoms until a person becomes ill. Damage to vital organs such as
the heart or kidneys are affected by high blood pressure. . Prevention
is the key to high blood pressure. In order to prevent high blood pressure
you can manage your diet, control your weight through exercise and healthy
eating, and reduce alcohol intake.
Discuss your blood pressure with your physician if you have concerns
or would like to know more about it. Be sure to give a complete and accurate
medical history if you have family members with high blood pressure. Once
diagnosed, life style modification or prescriptions may be prescribed.
